A 29-year-old man who damaged the wall of a tuckshop and stole property worth about $1 000 has been sentenced to community service.
Enock Mawungu of Sovelele area under Chief Mazetese in Mwenezi yesterday appeared before Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe to answer to charges of unlawful entry and theft. He stole property belonging to Mr Ophary Gwanangara (22) of stand number 44 Sherbone Resettlement, West Nicholson in Gwanda District.
Mawungu was convicted on his own plea of guilty and sentenced to 15 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended on condition that he compensated the complainant $408 before 31 December 2013 through the Gwanda Clerk of Court.
The remaining nine months were suspended on condition that Mawungu performs 315 hours of community service at Sandawana Police Station in Mberengwa starting on Monday.
Sentencing Mawungu, Ms Nazombe said she had considered that he was a first time offender but said what made the matter serious was that he had damaged the wall and the complainant had to reconstruct it. “You are young and energetic, you should learn to use your hands and not reap what you did not sow,” said Ms Nazombe.
The prosecutor, Mr Jefta Nyikadzinashe, said on 1 October this year Mawungu went to Mimwegumi Tuckshop.
He damaged the wall to create an opening which he used to gain entry. While he was inside the tuckshop, Mawungu stole memory cards, mobile phones, a solar panel and cash. The stolen property was valued at $995 and property worth $632 was recovered.
