“He told his wife that he wanted to sleep. He went to the bedroom and locked the door,” said the neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“Mrs Gumbo came to ask one of her neighbours to help her break down their bedroom door. She told him that she heard her husband pushing their wardrobe and tried to open the door but it was locked then she rushed to the window only to see her husband hanging from the trusses in their bedroom.”
The man is said to have stripped naked after locking the door then hanged himself from the trusses.
“When we got into the room he was dead and in his underwear only, his clothes were lying on the floor.
“We called other neighbours who then called the police,” said the neighbour.
The neighbour said the man had suicidal tendencies as he once attempted to commit suicide in 2005.
“We suspect that he hanged himself due to stress caused by his HIV status. He was diagnosed HIV positive in 2007 and has been on ARVs since then,” said a relative.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident yesterday.
“We are treating it as sudden death but investigations into the issue are under way,” said Insp Moyo.
