A GROUP of men burst into the foyer of the Windsor Hotel in Baker Avenue, Salisbury, early yesterday morning and caused several hundred dollars’ worth of damage after one of them had been refused a room.
Mr Albert Ruda, the owner of the hotel, said the men, believed to number about five, arrived at about 1.30 am and smashed the plate glass at the entrance of the hotel, a glass showcase, a number of tables, and ripped-out telephones from the reception desk.
Police confirmed that a white man had been arrested, and said they were continuing their investigations.
According to a resident, two men first arrived, and one asked for a room but was refused and told the hotel was full.
The man returned shortly afterward with reinforcements and proceeded to “wreck the place”.
Police arrived soon afterwards.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
- The destruction of property, whether private or public, is a crime that can land one in jail.
- Mob mentality – also called herd or hive mentality is dangerous because it can have severe consequences for one person and not the whole group. In this instance, there was only one man standing in the dock charged with destroying private property yet when the crime was committed, the accused was with his friends.
- People should learn to accept what they are told. The man failed to accept that the hotel was full. Instead of going to another hotel, he decided to vandalise the place.
