Man in court for destroying graves, assaulting council guards

A 27-YEAR-OLD man from Warren Park suburb in Harare has been arraigned before the courts on allegations of destroying graves at Warren Hills and severely assaulting city council security personnel.

Panashe Nyawasha appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei today facing charges of violating the Graves Act and attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody to August 1 for bail application. It is the State’s case that on  July 29, Nyawasha went to Warren Hills Cemetery and started destroying some tombstones with a hammer.

He was confronted by city council security guards at the cemetery and he severely assaulted them with the hammer before he was subdued.

The court heard that one of the security guards sustained a broken leg due to the assault by Nyawasha.

The value of damaged graves was US$1 500. Mr Rufaro Chonzi represented the State.
