A 22-YEAR-OLD man of no fixed abode appeared at the Mutare Magistrates’ Court facing robbery charges following an incident in Penhalonga in August.
Anotida Chiwada appeared before magistrate Perseverance Makhala charged with robbery and he pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was remanded in custody pending trial.
Prosecutor Tinotenda Muzondo told the court that on August 30, 2025, at around 7am, Chiwada – together with four unidentified accomplices – confronted Rufaro Chiwanga, as she walked home from church in the company of Vanisha Tenesi.
Chiwada attempted to start a conversation with Chiwanga but she ignored him.
This enraged the accused, who then ran towards her, blocked her path and issued threats of violence.
He allegedly grabbed her braided hair, forcibly searched her pockets and stole an iPhone 11 along with US$70 cash.
The group allegedly fled the scene immediately after the robbery. Prosecutor Muzondo said Chiwada acted with intent to induce fear and force the complainant to hand over her property. The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Chiwada, while his accomplices remain at large. Chiwada is set to return to court on October 24, 2025 for trial.
