Man in ICU after being stabbed in row over US$24 wages

Midlands Bureau

A 37-YEAR-OLD man is fighting for his life in the hospital after he was allegedly stabbed in the stomach following a salary dispute.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident that occurred on Thursday around 4 pm at Majuta fuel station, Charandura Business Centre in Chirumhanzu.

“Allegations are that the complainant Chrispen Chengeta (37) of Gwatiringa village in Chirumhanzu approached his workmate, a female adult aged 43 who is responsible for paying wages and asked for his previous day’s wage amounting to $24,” he said.

Insp Mahoko said Chengeta was advised to wait for their employer which did not go down well with him and a misunderstanding ensued between the two.

“Justin Svosve (38) a fellow employee overheard the argument and came to intervene. He also encouraged Chengeta to address his grievances to their employer,” he said.

Insp Mahoko said an enraged Chengeta tore off Svosve’s shirt, a move which heightened the situation.

He said sometime later, Svosve armed himself with a knife and iron bar approached Chengeta and struck him on the back with an iron bar before stabbing him in the stomach leaving intestines protruding.

“Police attended the scene and Svosve was subsequently arrested. The complainant is admitted at St Theresa Hospital in a serious condition.
“We appeal to members of the public to desist from resorting to violence when resolving disputes,” said Insp Mahoko.
