A MAN has been thrown behind bars after his unmuzzled dog bit a little girl who later died from rabies in a heartbreaking Mberengwa tragedy.

According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Nhamo Zhou (50) was convicted of culpable homicide by the Zvishavane Magistrates Court and sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in jail.

The NPAZ said the horrific incident occurred unfolded on 20 October 2025 at around 8am.
“The now deceased was bitten by an unmuzzled female dog belonging to the offender while playing alone in her yard.”
“The child’s mother managed to chase the dog away and discovered a deep cut above the girl’s left eye,” said the NPAZ.

The offender’s wife was informed and assisted the victim with medical bills as the family tried to save the little girl. But tragedy struck on 2 November 2025 when “the victim began vomiting and frothing at the mouth and nose and she was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.”

A post mortem later confirmed the cause of death as acute cardiorespiratory failure and rabies infection.

Zhou was arrested after failing to produce a vaccination card for the killer dog.

In a warning, the NPAZ urged all dog owners to act responsibly saying “members of the public that keep dogs” must ensure they do not endanger children.
