A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison by the High Court in Harare after being convicted of culpable homicide over the death of his cousin following a dispute over the sale of gold.
Richmore Gushu fatally assaulted his cousin, Blessed Gushu, after the latter allegedly told a prospective buyer that the gold he was selling was fake.
The court heard that Richmore had gone to Chiromo Shops intending to sell gold to Claudious Chiromo.
After inspecting the gold, the now-deceased allegedly said it was fake, angering the accused, who threatened to assault him.
The accused allegedly confronted his cousin who was behind the shop counter, dragged him to the ground and they both fell.
Richmore then stood up, picked up a broomstick from behind the shop’s door and struck Blessed twice in the stomach.
The deceased complained of severe pain and said he was unable to walk. He was given a place to rest, but his condition deteriorated later that night.
Blessed’s condition worsened at approximately 12:15 pm, and he was transferred to Mt Darwin Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said it remains committed to protecting the lives of citizens by prosecuting those who undermine public safety and security through acts of violence.
