A 38-YEAR-OLD Mutare man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail after being convicted of raping an 80-year-old granny in her bedroom last Friday night.
Weston Mufundirwa (38), of Dema Village in Chief Marange’s area was charged with rape under Section 65 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23), and was sentenced to a lengthy prison term by regional magistrate, Mrs Phathekile Msipa on Monday following a full trial.
Prosecutor, Mr Last Goredema, who led the State’s case, said the complainant was an 80-year-old woman from Parowa Village, under Chief Marange.
Mr Goredema said at around 10pm last Friday, Mufundirwa went to the complainant’s homestead, and used an axe to break the door.
He entered the dining room and forced open the bedroom door, waking the complainant as she heard the disturbance.
Mr Goredema said the complainant saw Mufundirwa as she rose from the bed and asked what he wanted.
The accused whispered in an apparent attempt to avoid raising alarm.
He raped her once.
Mr Goredema said when Mufundirwa rose to dress, the complainant reached for her mobile phone to call her daughter-in-law for help.
Mufundirwa snatched the phone and fled from the house, leaving the complainant behind.
The senior citizen later went to her daughter-in-law’s house and reported the incident.
The daughter-in-law returned with the victim to secure the house before taking her to her house to sleep overnight.
Mr Goredema said a report was made to the police, leading to Mufundirwa’s arrest, and the complainant was medically examined.
The medical report was produced in court as an exhibit.
