A 23-year-old Chitungwiza man will spend six months in prison after he was convicted of wearing a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) uniform when he was not a member of the force. Tafadzwa Marumanadzo was convicted of unlawful wearing of camouflage uniform after a full trial by Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Winfilder Tiatara.
Initially, Mrs Tiatara slapped him with a nine months jail term, but suspended three months on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
In his defence, Marumanadzo said the uniform belonged to his friend who was a member of ZNA, but had since relocated to South Africa.
Prosecuting, Mr Farai Katonha proved that on January 30, a member of ZNA based at Tongogara Barracks in Harare, David Ruzvidzo, met Marumanadzo at around 9:15am at Zengeza 5 corner shops.
He noticed that he was putting on army fatigue and worn-out civilian shoes without the hat.
Ruzvidzo interrogated Marumanadzo, who failed to produce his army identity card to explain why he was putting on the uniform. Ruzvidzo then took him to the police where he was arrested.
Meanwhile, Artwell Chigumbu (28) from Wedza and Linos Chaoneka (31) from Chitungwiza yesterday appeared before magistrate Mrs Blessing Murwisi facing charges of unlawful wearing of camouflage uniform and impersonation.
The matter was remanded to Tuesday next week for trial continuation.
