A MAN was struck and run over by a train at Melfort Bridge in Marondera on June 24, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.

According to police, the fatal incident occurred when the victim was sitting on the railway line at the time the train approached.

Mashonaland East Police Spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachii, said the tragic incident occurred at around 11 pm when Wellington Pedzisai (55) of 6460 Cranary Park, Harare, was driving a Zimbabwe National Railways locomotive train with registration number 34853 heading towards Mutare.

“When the train arrived at Melfort Bridge, it hit an unidentified 25-year-old man and he was crushed to death,” he said.

“ZRP Marondera police were called and took the body to the Marondera Provincial Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The deceased’s relatives have not been notified.”

Inspector Chazovachii warns the public to avoid sitting on railway tracks, saying trains can travel at any given time, resulting in such accidents.

He also warns the public who are missing a relative to contact the Marondera Police for assistance.

Recently, nine people lost their lives and 25 were seriously injured in a train-bus accident in Triangle, which saw President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa declare the incident a National Disaster.

The Government has assisted in the burial of the deceased and the treatment of the injured. The national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the accident occurred on the 16th of this month when a Makuku bus travelling from Chiredzi to Masvingo failed to stop at a rail level crossing, resulting in a collision.
