A SUSPECTED cop killer who went on a deadly rampage in Sanyati met his match after being cornered and arrested by members of the public and police on Sunday morning.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41), who allegedly shot and killed Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati before robbing a man of US$5 as he tried to make a police report.
In a statement, Comm Nyathi said the suspect turned violent when detectives tried to arrest him for another murder case.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) after the callous and brutal shooting to death of Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati early today,” he said.
Mutasa is also accused of shooting Detective Constable Ngwenya of CID Homicide, who was part of the team tracking him for the August 2025 murder of businessman Joseph Mutangadura.
After killing the officer, Mutasa reportedly stormed into the charge office, pointing his gun at civilians and robbing Abraham Mayavo (30) of US$5.
His violent spree came to an end when residents in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway teamed up with police to corner him.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway who quickly mobilised and assisted to effect an arrest on the suspect,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
The suspect is now in police custody and more details are expected to be released soon as investigations continue.
Constable Muchechesi’s death has sent shockwaves through the police force, with colleagues describing him as a brave officer who died in the line of duty.
