A MAN from Zaloba resettlement area on the outskirts of Gweru fatally struck his ex-girlfriend with a log before committing suicide allegedly by drinking pesticide, police confirmed yesterday. Police spokesperson for Midlands Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the incident which occurred on Sunday in Zaloba area. He said Charles Gwazemba, 30, could not stomach the fact that his ex-lover, Lavenia Ncube, 23, had moved on after finding new love.
Insp Goko said jealousy got the better of him after he saw Ncube walking with her new-found boyfriend.

He said Gwazemba struck Ncube several times on the head with a log resulting in her instant death.
Insp Goko said before killing Ncube, Gwazemba first chased after Ncube’s boyfriend who saved his life by taking to his heels.
He said they were still to get the finer details of the matter and investigations were on.

Police sources close to the investigation said Ncube, who was employed as a maid by Dr Thomas Ndebele, a medical doctor based in Gweru, was walking towards a bus stop intending to get lifts back to the city when she met her fate.
Ncube had visited her rural home in Zaloba on Friday.

“On Sunday late in the afternoon she was walking to a bus stop in the company of her boyfriend when they were spotted by her ex-boyfriend, Charles Gwazemba. He confronted the two and asked the boyfriend why he was walking with Ncube,” said the source.

The source said Gwazemba, who was armed with a log, attacked Ncube’s boyfriend but the man quickly took to his heels.
Added the source:

“Gwazemba chased after Ncube’s boyfriend but could not catch up with him. He quickly returned and started assaulting Ncube with the log while accusing her of dumping him for another man. Ncube died on the spot and Gwazemba threw her body into the bush and proceeded home where he later drank poison and died,”

The source said Ncube’s body was later found with multiple injuries in the bush on Wednesday afternoon.
“The two’s bodies have since been taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital and investigations are still in progress,” said the source.

Dr Ndebele said he was shocked when he learnt of Ncube’s death yesterday morning. He said Ncube had worked for him for about a year before she met her death.
