A MAN who was employed as a gardener pulled a shocker when he allegedly cut off his manhood and wrapped it with slices of bread before eating it.
The shocking incident happened last Saturday at Masasa in Kwekwe in the Midlands Province. A source close to investigations said Phanankosi Phiri (19) started to act strange last Friday and on the following day at around 8pm, he reached for a knife and started to cut himself on both hands.
“At first we thought he was just playing but we realised that he was serious when he sliced his arms with a kitchen knife and licked the blood. We thought he was drunk, but we later realised that it was not drunkenness,” said the source.
His employer Prisca Saungweme said she tried to stop him from slicing his hands but he threatened to beat her up.
“He became violent and threatened to beat us up. We retreated and watched in shock,” said Saungweme.
While they were still watching the shocking incident unfolding before their eyes, they witnessed a more spine-chilling episode when Phiri chopped off his penis.
“He unzipped his trousers and grabbed his manhood before chopping it off with a kitchen knife while calling out the name of his employer’s child, claiming she was his wife. Blood gushed out as he grabbed the piece and rushed to the kitchen and opened the bread bin while blood was dripping from the wound and picked slices of bread, wrapped the cut-off piece with the slices of bread and ate it,” said the source.

Police attended the scene and ferried Phiri to Kwekwe District Hospital for treatment. While he was in hospital, sources said he kept on calling out the name of the child of his employer, claiming that she was his wife.
Describing his past behaviour Saungweme said:” We are at a loss of words about the strange behaviour of Phanankosi.
“For the couple of years, he has worked here, he did not show any signs of mischief or stray from the disciplinary lines. He was a respectful and polite guy but last Friday he just changed and started to behave strangely.”

Sources said while he was being treated for the wounds, he was likely to be sent for further mental evaluation.
Phiri is also suspected to have sexually abused a family member.
He is admitted to Gweru Provincial Hospital after being transferred from Kwekwe. ZRP Midlands Province spokesman Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko referred questions to the national police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who could not be contacted by the time of going to press.
