A 34-year-old man from Juru was arrested last week after confessing that he murdered his seven-year-old daughter and dumped her body in a pond in a bid to evade a maintenance order which had been awarded to his divorced wife. Charles Kavhumbura of Sasman Farm, Juru, allegedly murdered his daughter, Rufaro Kavhumbura, whose body was found floating in the pond. Mashonaland East acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident yesterday and said investigations were still in progress.

“I can confirm receiving a report of a father who murdered his daughter because he wanted to avoid a maintenance order. It is very sad to note that a father would gruesomely murder his own daughter. This shows how some people do not respect the sanctity of life. We, therefore, urge members of the public to always cherish the sanctity of life,” he said. It is alleged that on October 14 around 8.00am, Pedzisai Kachepa (34) – the mother to the deceased – left Rufaro and her 10-year-old brother at home and went to Umristur Primary School in Juru. When she returned home around 6.00pm, she found that her daughter was missing and went to Juru Police Station to file a missing person report.

On October 16, it is reported that Rufaro’s body was found floating in a pond at Maiden Svisva Farm by two teenage boys who wanted to fetch water. The boys informed Never Chako (53) who went to report to the matter at Juru police station. Rufaro’s body was retrieved and taken to Murehwa Hospital where she was certified dead and was further taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for post-mortem. It was found that the death was due to head and neck trauma.
