Oswel Kwecha took advantage of the toddler while she was playing with her friends in his yard.
He called her into his room and threatened to shoot or stab her if she resisted and raped her.
Kwecha was not asked to plead to rape charges when he appeared before Ms Esthere Chivasa.
However, while in the dock, Kwecha went berserk and started uttering meaningless statements.
This prompted the magistrate to give an order for Kwecha to be examined by two medical doctors to ascertain his mental status.
He was remanded in custody to October 25 for routine remand and his trial date has been scheduled for November 24.
Appearing for the State Mr Allan Goche alleges that on October 6 this year, Kwecha after calling the girl into his room, ordered her to sleep on a couch. He then gave her US$1 and covered her face with a cloth.
Kwecha ordered the toddler to remain silent as he pinned her down and raped her once.
After committing the offence, the State argues Kwecha reportedly threatened to shoot her, stab or whip her if ever she disclosed the offence.
He later ordered the girl to go outside and join her friends.
The matter came to light when the girl’s mother was bathing her and noticed semen on her private parts.
She quizzed her and the girl narrated the ordeal.
A police report was made which led to Kwecha’s arrest and the minor was taken to for medical examination.
