since he had 10 more other children.
Edwin Mangwanya was taken to the Harare civil courts last Wednesday by his former wife Neria Tembo who wanted US$100 a month.
He, however, claimed that he could only afford US$60 per month.
Mangwanya is employed by the Zimbabwe National Army.
“I cannot afford to pay US$100 per month because I have 10 other children as well as some expenses like funeral policy and I have a loan, I am repaying US$60 per month,” he said.
Asked by the court to produce the children’s birth certificates, Mangwanya pleaded with the courts for two weeks to produce the documents from Bulawayo where he stays.
“I came here unaware of this matter as we have a pending matter in the High Court and I did not bring the birth certificates.
“I need about two weeks to collect them from Bulawayo,” he said.
Magistrate Ms Vongai Muchuchuti told Mangwanya that the court cannot give him two weeks as it would be month-end.
Mangwanya, however, made assurances that he will pay the maintenance effective this month even if the judgment would be granted by the end of the month.
Tembo, who had applied for the maintenance denied Mangwanya’s claim of having 10 children.
“If he is telling the truth, he must bring the birth certificates to prove his claim.
“I am not aware of the children,” she said.
She said the child needs US$213 per month for his expenses and they are supposed to meet in between with Mangwanya.
Magistrate Muchuchuti postponed the matter to July 28 for Mangwanya to produce the birth certificates.
