Man rejects daughter over maintenance

A MARRIED father of five yesterday disowned his two-year-old daughter and demanded a paternity test in a bid to avoid paying maintenance.
Floyd Demadema dragged his estranged lover, Teckla Dube, to court seeking a reduction in maintenance payment for his two minor children.

Demadema, who had been ordered to pay $250 for his two children in his absence after he failed to appear in court last week, made a dramatic U-turn before magistrate Victor Mpofu and claimed that he only has one child with Dube.

He said he was surprised when Dube told him that he had to pay $250 for two minor children.
“To my knowledge I only have one child with this woman. I earn $266 and I have three other children with my wife so I cannot afford to pay $250. In any case, she had this child when we had ended our relationship,” said Demadema.

Dube shot back at Demadema claiming they continued sleeping together after their relationship had ended.
“You knew I was in another relationship but that did not stop you from sleeping with me. After I told you I was pregnant with our second child you denied it at first but you later accepted that the child was yours,” she said.

Magistrate Mpofu granted the appeal and ordered Demadema to pay $120 from the end of this month for both his children until a paternity test is done.
