A policeman stationed in Hwange has pleaded with the court to protect him from his abusive wife whom he accused of physically assaulting him.
Misheck Mukwada Sakala of Empumalanga said he and his wife Linnet Ncube, 24, are on separation and his wife now lives elsewhere in the same suburb in Hwange.
She told the court that she became violent after Sakala allegedly infected her with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and refused to accompany her for treatment.
Ncube, who is employed by a construction company, said the STI has been recurring over the years.
Health practitioners encourage persons infected with an STI to bring their sexual partner for treatment to avoid recurrence of the infection.
Sakala told Hwange magistrate Sharon Rosemani: “May the court help me. This woman is very violent and always assaults me. She even cut my clothes with a scissors.”
Ncube, who last year had a three months conviction set aside for five years after assaulting Sakala, pleaded guilty to physical abuse.
She was sentenced to three months in jail but one month was suspended on condition of good behaviour while the remaining two months were suspended on condition she performs 70 hours of community service at St Patrick’s Hospital.
There was no clarification on what happens to the previous conviction.
Asked why she committed the offence Ncube said: “He infected me with an STI which has been recurring but he has been refusing to go for treatment.”
The magistrate asked the two if they would want to go for counselling but both refused.
On leaving the courtroom, there was near drama as Ncube shouted at the prosecutor and Sakala’s sister accusing them of interfering with her marriage resulting in the couple’s separation.
Prosecuting, Alfred Mzizi said Ncube beat Sakala at the Hwange Police Station gate on May 21.
“On May 21 the complainant went to the accused’s workplace to inquire about his clothes she had taken with her. He found her wearing his T-shirt and asked her to accompany him to the police station so they could iron out their differences,” said Mzizi.
The prosecutor said Ncube attempted to escape when they reached the gate to the police station but Sakala grabbed her. “That’s when she picked a stone and hit him on the cheek and arm,” said Mzizi.
