Phillip Tshumele of Village 4 in Rutenga allegedly teamed up with the mother, Matsiveyi Moyo, who was legally married to his elder brother to strangle the one-month-old baby girl before slitting her throat with a kitchen knife. They buried her in a one metre deep grave.
Tshumele and Moyo allegedly decided to kill the baby after Tshumele’s brother disowned the child and said he was not going to acquire a birth certificate. Masvingo police spokesman Inspector Tineyi Matake, confirmed the arrest of the two over the matter.
“We arrested a man and a woman who are related and went on to sire a child in an adulterous relationship, but ended up killing the baby before burying her body in a shallow grave. The suspects first
strangled her by twisting her neck before slitting her throat with a kitchen knife,” he said.
Inspector Matake said the two would appear in court soon facing murder charges.
It is alleged that Tshumele and Moyo had an adulterous relationship dating back to last year that resulted in a pregnancy.
But Moyo’s husband disowned the pregnancy and eventually the child when it was born last month.
On Saturday, Moyo allegedly took the newly born baby to Tshumele’s house so that they could acquire a birth certificate for her.
Just before midnight on the same day, Tshumele woke Moyo up and requested that they take a walk in a nearby bush.
After walking for about five kilometres, Tshumele allegedly stuffed some blanket pieces into the infant’s mouth, before strangling her and thereafter slit her throat with a kitchen knife.
The pair then buried the girl’s corpse in a shallow grave, but they were arrested the following morning after police received a tip off.
