POLICE have expressed concern over a recent spate of child kidnappings in Harare after a man snatched a baby in Mbare and tried to flee with the toddler.
Walter Hatitye Chigayo, 24, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly kidnapping a baby, aged one year and seven months.
The horror incident occurred at about 9pm.
Emily Chiambaiwa, the child’s mother, noticed Walter fleeing while carrying her baby.
Emily had briefly stepped away to pack some food items, leaving her child unattended, outside her home.
She cried out for help, attracting the attention of fellow residents.
The community members intervened and chased after and caught Walter and then took him to Mbare Police Station.
This incident has left the Mbare community reeling and has highlighted the urgent need for increased vigilance regarding child safety.
Harare’s deputy provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Faith Mapisa, confirmed the arrest.
“Police have apprehended a man from Mbare for the kidnapping of a baby.
“Thankfully, the complainant and the child were unharmed, and the accused is expected to appear in court soon.”
