A 36-YEAR-OLD man from Joko Village in Beitbridge District is on the run after allegedly stabbing his 87-year-old grandfather to death following a dispute over cigarettes.

Acting Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Stanford Mguni confirmed the incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening.
He said the suspect, Honest Chauke, allegedly attacked the elderly man after he failed to get money to buy cigarettes.

“I can confirm that on Tuesday at around 7PM, the deceased, John Msindo Chauke (87), was seated on the veranda of his homestead with his wife, Annah Mlilo (77), when the suspect approached and demanded money to buy cigarettes,” said Asst Insp Mguni.

“When he was told that there was no money, the suspect became enraged and stabbed the now deceased three times on the back and once near the left ear with an unknown sharp object. The victim died on the spot.”

Asst Insp Mguni said the suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack and he is still at large.
The body of the deceased was taken to Beitbridge District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

“As police, we are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact their nearest police station,” said Asst Insp Mguni.
