Man stabs nephew over R10

A 29-year-old man from Muzondakaya Village, Steven Mutonono, has been remanded in custody following a violent altercation at a local bottle store that left his nephew seriously injured.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said Mutonono appeared in court on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after allegedly stabbing his nephew over a dispute involving R10 change.

The incident occurred on January 31, 2025, at Pakhule Bottle Store in Chibuwe Business Centre, Chipinge.

According to the State, Mutonono and his nephew, whose name has not been disclosed, engaged in a heated argument over a R10 change.

The situation escalated when Mutonono allegedly pulled out a press-button knife from his pocket and stabbed his nephew on the left side of the stomach.

The attack resulted in a deep cut that exposed the victim’s intestines, leaving him in critical condition.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The weapon used in the assault was recovered from Mutonono at the scene, and he was subsequently arrested by local authorities.

Mutonono appeared before the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court on February 5, 2025, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to return to court on February 9, 2025, for further proceedings.

The NPAZ said the case shocked the local community, with many expressing concern over the trivial nature of the dispute that led to such a violent outcome.

“It is heartbreaking to see family members resort to violence over such a small amount of money,” said a local resident. “This incident is a reminder of how quickly tempers can flare, often with devastating consequences.”

Police have urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully and to avoid resorting to violence. “We encourage community members to seek mediation or report disputes to the authorities before they escalate into violence,” said a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police. “This incident could have been avoided, and we hope it serves as a lesson to others.”

As the case progresses, the court will determine the appropriate legal consequences for Mutonono’s actions. The incident has also sparked discussions about the need for conflict resolution mechanisms in communities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Steven Mutonono remains in custody and is expected to appear in court again on February 9, 2025.
