Man steals copper wire, fences homestead, fields

POLICE in Mangwe District, Matabeleland South Province have arrested a 32-year-old man whom they found in possession of copper wire, part of which he had used to fence off his homestead and fields.

The copper wire belonged to telecommunications company, TelOne. Police in Plumtree confirmed the arrest of Xolisani Moyo (32) in an internal memorandum. They said police in Madabe area in Mangwe received a complaint that there were people who were vandalising and stealing TelOne property, felling poles and stripping them of copper wire along the Plumtree-Mphoengs Road area near Madabe Post. Investigations were carried out early this year and it was revealed that a lot of copper wire was missing.

“The police then decided to take turns in patrolling the area to check for the copper wire and on 19 March 2023 we got to the accused’s homestead and fields acting on a tip-off from members of the public and found that he had fenced his homestead and fields with the copper wire in question,” said the police in their memorandum.

Police added that Moyo was not at home at the time they arrived. Police discovered that he had secured his homestead and field with copper wire stripped from TelOne poles. He was arrested and the matter was referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who conducted further investigations and found out that the copper wire belonged to TelOne. The amount of copper wire which was stolen weighed 17,8kgs but its monetary value could not be ascertained by the time of going to print. Police said Moyo will be taken to court soon.
