A 22-year-old Bulawayo man has been arrested after allegedly stealing US$10 300 belonging to his mother and blowing it on an online gambling game known as Aviator.
Police in Bulawayo confirmed the arrest of McMillan Zimunhu of Nkulumane 11, who is accused of stealing his mother’s hard-earned savings meant for a building project.
In a statement, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the 48 year old self employed mother, had been keeping the money at various hiding points inside her house between 2013 and January 2026.
“All her five children knew about the money. She last checked the money in September 2025, when it totalled US$10 300,” said Insp Msebele.
On 19 January 2026, the woman discovered that all the money was missing when she attempted to use it, prompting her to report the matter to the police.
Following investigations and interviews with her children, police established that her second-born son, Zimunhu, was responsible for the theft.
“He admitted to having used all his mother’s money on several occasions while gambling on a game machine called Aviator and lost it,” said Insp Msebele.
The total value stolen is US$10 300 and nothing was recovered.
Police urged members of the public to avoid keeping large sums of money in their homes and instead use banks to safeguard their cash.
