A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Mbembesi in Matabeleland North province ran berserk and assaulted his neighbour with a claw bar after he was allegedly caught stealing roofing sheets and windows.
Buthomuzi Dlamini appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing a charge of attempted murder.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody to Friday for continuation of trial.
During the trial, the victim Tembani Bulala said Dlamini’s goal was to steal the roofing sheets.
“The accused’s aim was to steal the roofing material. He was removing the sheets and when we caught him he had already removed the windows.

“He then assaulted me with a claw bar and l sustained injuries on my head and on the left arm. I believe that the accused must be given a custodial sentence and must pay restitution for the 11 roofing sheets that he damaged in my son’s homestead,” said Bulala.
In his defence, Dlamini admitted to assaulting the victim but stated that his goal was not to steal roofing sheets.
“My intention was to remove the roofing sheets and put them on the ground because I had a misunderstanding with the owner of the property,” said Dlamini.
Allegations against Dlamini are that on 19 February 2024, he went to Khangelani Bulala’s homestead and tried to enter the house through the roof.
While he was on the roof, he was spotted by Tembani and he jumped off the roof.
He was armed with a weapon and he then struck him once on the face and fled.
The victim sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical examination. Investigations were carried out leading to the arrest of Dlamini.
