A 19-YEAR-OLD Bulilima man allegedly strangled his 71-year old grandmother in her sleep and took R1, 900, which the old woman had put between her breasts.Police sources say Wahlile Nkomo from Madlambuzi pounced on the unsuspecting woman, Wanni Sibanda, shortly after 10PM and tried to steal the money from her.
They said the woman had sold two beasts and Nkomo demanded a share of the money to buy some beer but his granny refused.
He then sneaked into her bedroom hut at night and attempted to steal the money from her but the woman, alerted by his movements, woke up.
Realising he had been spotted, Nkomo allegedly strangled his grandmother to death and took away the R1, 900.
Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident.
“We have arrested a man who is suspected to have murdered his grandmother. Nkomo woke up around 10PM and proceeded to his grandmother’s bedroom where she was sleeping alone.
“He strangled her to death and then took R1, 900 which she had and covered her with a blanket.”
Asst Insp Ngwenya said as he went out of the hut, Nkomo met his sister Lucia Sibanda who was coming to check on her grandmother after hearing noises coming from her bedroom.
He said Nkomo told his sister that their grandmother was asleep.
Ass Insp Ngwenya said the matter came to light on the following day when Lucia discovered her grandmother’s body.
“On the following morning Sibanda went to check on her grandmother and found her lying dead on her bed. She suspected her brother and made a report to the police.
“Nkomo was arrested and he was found in possession of R1, 710,” he said.
