adminManchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs believes that a winter break would be to the benefit of both the England national team and English clubs competing in the European competition. Giggs, who has navigated his way through over twenty hectic Christmas schedules in his extraordinary career, knows more than most about the physical demands of the Barclays Premier League.
Elsewhere on the continent, the elite European leagues afford their sides a substantial rest period ahead of the New Year.
In Germany, clubs are treated to a near five-week break, while in France, players are granted almost three weeks to recharge the batteries.
Spanish and Italian clubs both have a fortnight off over the New Year period.
Asked whether the Premier League should follow this example, Giggs told MUTV: “TV is huge over the festive period and obviously all of the stadiums are full. But it does have an effect on the national team.
“If you have a winter break then it definitely helps you. And going into the Champions League as well, you have had a little week’s rest and it definitely helps you.
“I think I would like a winter break, it doesn’t really need to be over Christmas. I think it could just be in January, maybe when you get a couple of weeks off so you can get to go away, maybe get some sun, and then have a week’s training before getting back into the games. I don’t think it is a lot to ask for.
“I have benefited from that in October and November, getting a few days off in the international breaks. It does help you and you do feel refreshed.” — Reuters.
