LONDON. — Manchester United will look to trigger a 12-month extension on Marcus Rashford’s contract if they cannot agree a new deal with the England international.
According to the Mirror, United have been looking to tie Rashford down to a new five-year deal, with the 24-year-old out of contract at the end of the season. Rashford could walk away for free next summer, although United have another option up their sleeves.
If United can’t agree a new deal before the start of the World Cup in November, they will trigger a 12-month extension in Rashford’s current deal, that will buy them time to continue negotiations. There is a sense of fear around Old Trafford over Rashford’s future, and they are aware of interest in the forward from around Europe.
Talks are currently ongoing between United and Rashford’s representatives, although no deal has been agreed just yet. Rashford has been at United his whole career, but he has been increasingly linked with a move away from the club.
Rashford has been in fine form this season, and is still seen as the future of United despite the fact he is already one of their more experienced players. Thrashing out a new deal shouldn’t be too much of an issue, but interest from French giants Paris Saint-Germain has unsettled the mood in Manchester.
Therefore, United will play it safe and trigger a 12-month extension should they fail to agree a deal in the next few months, and try to deter interest for at least another season.
United have been prone to losing stars at the end of their contract, and they cannot afford to lose Rashford for nothing.
United want to extend Rashford’s stay at United until 2027, and Erik ten Hag wants his future to be sorted out as soon as possible. And the international break could prove to be a useful negotiation period, with Rashford missing out through injury.
Rashford currently earns around £180 000 a week at United, which is well shy of Jadon Sancho’s £350 000 a week deal. Rashford is due a serious pay rise, and it’s likely that United will have to match Sancho’s wage at the very least.
Wages are not something that the interested PSG will have a problem with, putting increased pressure on United. But the extension will ease that immediate pressure, if it needs to be triggered. — The Daily Star.
