A BANKET man, who beat up his neighbour to death after an altercation over stolen maize, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail.

Silvester Nyamadzawo, of Plot 24 Red Mile Farm, Banket, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by High Court judge Justice Cathtine Bachi-Mzawazi.

Prosecutor Review Nikisi told the court Clifton Mapurisa was 43 when he was bashed to death by Nyamadzawo. The court heard Nyamadzawo was 29 at the time the crime was committed.

Nyamadzawo and Mapurisa were neighbours. On September 17, last year, Nyamadzawo approached the deceased and accused him of stealing some maize at his workplace.

Apparently the maize belonged to Mapurisa’s mother. A fight broke out between the two. Nyamadzawo used a wooden log to bash Mapurisa.

He passed away on the morning of September 18, 2025.

The post-mortem revealed that the deceased sustained broken ribs and a ruptured lung.
