Manager up for fraud

A manager with a local transport company who allegedly swindled his employer of more than US$7 000 has appeared in court.
Reginult Kanyai (34), the logistics manager at Addleford (Pvt) Ltd, is also the director of a transport company, Memostart Investments.
He was not asked to plead to the fraud charge when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Don Ndirowei who granted him US$200 bail.
He will be back in court for routine remand on March 15. Prosecutor Ms Svodai Kadivirire alleges that Addleford was contracted by Bedra Enterprises to transport its refrigerated products from Harare to Bulawayo.
The State says Kanyai misrepresented to Bedra’s director, Kennedy Mhakayakora, that Memostart was a subsidiary of Addleford.
He then directed Mhakayakora to channel all the payments to Memostart’s CBZ Bank account.
The court heard that from October last year to January this year, Bedra would deposit money into Memostart’s account.
Kanyai, the prosecution says, would withdraw the money and pocket half of it before surrendering the balance to Addleford.
On October 14, Mhakayakora deposited US$800 and Kanyai took US$400 before surrendering the remainder to Addleford, it is alleged. That same month, Mhakayakora deposited US$800 into Kanyai’s company and he again converted US$400 to his personal use, the State says.
It is alleged Kanyai committed the offence on 24 occasions and would lie to his director, Happymore Masvaure, that the trucks had been hired for lesser amounts.
The alleged offence came to light when Mhakayakora approached Masvaure in Kanyai’s absence with the intention of hiring a truck.
Masvaure then reportedly discovered that previous payments amounting to US$7 100 were made via Memostart.
Masvaure made a police report leading to Kanyai’s arrest. – CR.
