Johannesburg. — Opposition parties are demanding a probe into how taxpayers’ money was used for Nelson Mandela’s funeral following allegations that some of the money was misspent by officials. According to the Sunday Independent, an investigation by the Daily Dispatch newspaper claims that a senior ANC official embezzled part of the money released by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. The newspaper reported that R5,9 million was paid to a transport company linked to the official and that some of the money was then distributed to other companies that had nothing to do with transport.
The money was, however, meant to be used to transport mourners to Mandela’s memorial services. The Daily Dispatch claims that the money was instead used to print ANC T-shirts. — Sapa.
