POLICE in Matabeleland North have launched a manhunt for a 24-year-old suspect from Mlonyeni Village in Lupane District who allegedly brutally axed his grandmother to death on Friday.
The suspect, believed to have been under the influence of drugs when he allegedly committed the offence, was identified as Logic Nyathi.
He allegedly struck the deceased, Lucy Sibanda, at around 2pm at her homestead in Mlonyeni Village under Chief Mabhikwa area.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda yesterday confirmed the murder. Sibanda’s body was first discovered by her neighbour, Mr Zamani Vundla who then alerted the police.
“On 13 July 2024 at 8am, a report of murder was received at ZRP Lupane from the informant to the effect that Lucy Sibanda’s body was found in her bedroom hut with several deep cuts on the head and a wound on the back of the neck,” he said.
“Circumstances are that on 12 July 2024 at around 2.30 pm, the deceased’s daughter, Simangile Sibanda, made several phone calls to her mother, but there was no response. This prompted her to call Zamani Vundla, the deceased’s neighbour and she asked him to check on her mother.”
Insp Banda said when Vundla proceeded to the deceased’s homestead, he discovered the body in her bedroom.
“Upon arrival in the yard, he observed blood stains emanating from the deceased’s bedroom. He entered the bedroom and discovered her body on the couch with several deep cuts on her head and a wound on the back of her neck,” he said.
Zamani Vundla then informed the deceased’s daughter and other villagers about the incident.
Insp Banda said a report was made to the police, who attended the scene.
The body was taken to St Luke’s Hospital mortuary before it was later transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for a post-mortem.
Insp Banda said the suspect is still at large and investigations are underway. He urged youth to refrain from drugs and substance abuse.
