BUSINESS leaders, politicians, church figures and academics in Manicaland have welcomed the appointment of businessman and Senator, Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei as the new Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, describing him as a seasoned entrepreneur with the expertise to drive investment and accelerate economic growth.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently appointed Senator Tagwirei to lead the newly-created Ministry of Economic Development and Investment Promotion following the restructuring of the former Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion into two separate portfolios.
The appointment has drawn widespread praise across Manicaland, with stakeholders expressing confidence in Dr Tagwirei’s ability to attract investment and spearhead national development initiatives.
Member of Parliament for the Manicaland Women’s Quota and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs, Community and Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Honourable Gertrude Mutandi, said the appointment reflects confidence in Dr Tagwirei’s proven business acumen and strategic vision.
“On behalf of Manicaland Province and in my personal capacity, I warmly congratulate Senator Dr Tagwirei on his appointment as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion.
“His selection for this important position speaks volumes about his sharp analytical mind, deep understanding of market dynamics and unwavering commitment to national development.
“Over the years, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership in business and community development. His ability to identify opportunities, manage risk and create value is remarkable. I have no doubt that he will excel in this new role and contribute significantly to Zimbabwe’s economic transformation,” she said.
Honourable Mutandi said she was optimistic that Dr Tagwirei’s leadership will help unlock new economic opportunities and advance the country’s development agenda.
Mutare-based church leader and businessman, Bishop Moses Mwagura, who chairs the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Advisory Council, described the appointment as timely and well deserved.
“Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei possesses the qualities and experience required to lead a ministry that is central to Zimbabwe’s economic aspiration.
“This is a fitting appointment, and I would like to commend His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa for identifying and assigning him to such a strategic portfolio. His understanding of business and investment makes him well placed to support the country’s economic development goals,” he said.
Manicaland Chamber of SMEs chairperson and Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce vice-president for Manicaland, Dr Kudzai Makore, said the new minister brings invaluable private-sector experience to Government.
“Minister Tagwirei represents entrepreneur-to-entrepreneur leadership. Having built Sakunda Holdings from a small enterprise into a major conglomerate, he understands the challenges faced by SMEs, including access to capital, collateral requirements and market access.
“The establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Economic Development and Investment Promotion creates a sharper focus on investment mobilisation and development financing. We expect increased support for SMEs through affordable financing, stronger value chain integration and enhanced partnerships with financial institutions. These interventions have the potential to stimulate industrial growth and create employment opportunities in line with Vision 2030,” said Dr Makore.
Religious and academic institutions also joined the chorus of congratulations.
In a message delivered on behalf of Bishop Dr Nehemiah Mutendi, the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) said, Dr Tagwirei’s extensive business experience would be an asset in shaping policies that foster sustainable economic growth and investment.
Solusi University, where Dr Tagwirei is an honorary alumnus, also celebrated the appointment, expressing confidence that he would bring the same dedication and leadership qualities that have distinguished him in business to his new ministerial role.
