Man’s response to God’s choice

Dr Nick Ohizu-The Voice of God

Our happiness in marriage is found in the first response of man after God promised to make a helpmate for him in Genesis 2:18. Mistakes in marriage are products of misguided mentorship in this aspect thereby causing many to end up in divorce.

Our happiness is our personal responsibility and choosing a life partner must be done with utmost care because a lifetime is a long period to be unhappy.

Nobody will make you happy without your contribution and that’s why God allowed Adam and Eve to make their contribution when it came to the solemnisation of their marriage.

The statements made by man is found in Gen.2:22-23[NLT] “Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. 23 “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called woman, because she was taken from man.”

After God promised to make a helpmate, he actually went on to fulfil His promise. God is still the only person I’ve known who has never failed to fulfil His promise. If you are looking for someone who cannot fail, please try Jesus.

One of the most heart breaking failures in marriage today is the inability to keep the promises made on or before marriage. Yet the foundation of marriage is laid on the ability of God fulfilling the promise He made to man.

If marriage is going to succeed, we must keep our promises. Most crises in marriages can be traced back to when someone began to break their promises.

There are 3 important lessons hidden in man’s response to the matrimonial provision:

1. God only brought Eve after He finished: Please take note that God made a woman, not a girl. This signifies the importance of maturity before marriage. Most child marriages happen to girls and God never approved that.

A female must be left to mature into womanhood before she can be taken into marriage.

The next thing is that God brought after He made. Most people expect God to give them a spouse immediately they ask, but God can only give you a spouse after He has made the person. It is still possible for a married couple to hand over their marriage to God and He can make it happy.

2. What Adam said: Adam said “ this one is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh”, bone signifies structure while flesh signifies beauty.

The bone was placed before the flesh because without structure, beauty is vain. A lot of beautiful or handsome people are divorced or single because less attention is paid to character. Structure represents the principles that govern good character. Someone said that “beauty is sending a lot of people into marriage but bad character is busy bringing them back”. We must take time to develop good character before we rush to get married. The good thing is that character can be changed if people are willing to give God a chance.

3. What Eve didn’t say: Did you realise that this was the first wedding where a bride didn’t say anything? You might not have noted that Eve never spoke to God. During their marriage ceremony, Adam spoke and expressed his joy for being given a wife but Eve never said a word both to her husband and to God.

Eve’s action shows lack of appreciation for what we have. Most people are so much focused on the grass being greener next door that they end up forgetting to appreciate what they have at home.

Nobody is perfect but I believe that with appreciation and encouragement, people can have some introspection and begin to change. Eve’s inability to appreciate God for giving her a husband led to Eve opening the door for Satan.

It is appalling that Eve got to speak to Satan first and only spoke with God defending what Satan had said. When we fail to involve God in the beginning of marriage, we will end up looking for Him later after Satan has scattered everything.

The feminine gender is in the forefront of worship today because they realised that God can fix every mistake.

This has taught us not to leave the decision to seek for divine solutions to marital crises until it is too late.

To be continued.
