Manyuchi wins by knockout in Zambia

The clash was in the welterweight division and it was one of the undercard bouts to a World Professional Boxing Association (WPBA) between Zambia’s Catherine Phiri and Nathalie Forget of Canada.

He was one of four Zimbabwean boxers who were on the bill.

Diana Makumbe lost on a points decision to Zambian Royda Mushukama in a non-title bantamweight bout after six rounds.

Nicola Mutonhori also lost on points to Lawrence Mwale in a non-title light middleweight match.

Manyuchi’s win was the story of the day for the Zimbabweans as Tinashe Madziwana also lost on a split decision to Gibson Kamoto in a bantamweight match.

Zimbabwe Boxing and Wrestling Control Board secretary-general Patrick Mukondiwa praised Manyuchi yesterday.

“I have to single out Manyuchi who is really our boxing beacon as it stands and I think the future is very bright for him. If all goes well he will participate in an international title fight in the not so distant future.

“The fact that he fought a mere three days after arriving from another bout in Namibia where he fought to a draw against Antony Jaarman in Windhoek, confirms he is a good boxer with bright prospects,” Mukondiwa said.

He said winning on points away from home was never an easy thing especially if the fight was a close one as judges tended to side with the home boxers.

Mukondiwa said only a knockout decisions guaranteed foreign boxers wins on foreign land.
