TWO-time World Boxing Council (WBC) international welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi will once again defend his title outside the country after a promoter from Malawi expressed interest in hosting his next title defence fight next month. Manyuchi, 26, had for sometime been linked to Namibia’s Sunshine Boxing Academy after no local deal was forthcoming and the appearance of another regional promoter into the picture means the boxer’s dream of defending his title on home soil has now evaporated.
Although he declined to name the promoter, there are only two major boxing promoters in Malawi, New Dawn Boxing Promotion and No Pain No Gain Boxing.
The pugilist has been sweating to land a stable since Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions of Zambia did not renew his contract last year under unclear circumstances. Manyuchi said he would announce his move next week.
“I wanted to fight locally, but it seems that I can’t get any deal. However, a Malawian stable has shown interest in hosting my next fight and what I can tell you is that a deal is in the pipeline and we’ll wrap it up next week and announce my new home,” said Manyuchi. He had to secure a promoter before February to avoid heavy sanctions from the WBC, which included stripping him of his title.
