Mapfumo’s agent, George Deda, yesterday said Dikwena, who had an impressive run last season where they finished second behind Kaizer Chiefs, have been monitoring the midfielder for some time.
Mapfumo joined former Botswana side Township Rollers at the beginning of the year.
“Platinum Stars have been monitoring his progress ever since he moved to Botswana six months ago and they indicated that they wanted a closer look at him,” said Deda who has shaken the local player agency community since returning home from England.
“So, he left today (yesterday) for the trials which will last one week. Mapfumo himself is thrilled by the prospect because the same route to the Absa Premiership was used by Conrad Whitby who is now at Polokwane City.”
Deda also revealed that in-form Highlanders goalkeeper Munyaradzi Diya is wanted by two South African clubs and could be leaving for trials this weekend.
Newly promoted side Mpumalanga Black Aces and Black Leopards, who were demoted last season, have expressed interest in the goalkeeper.
Diya’s first port of call will be at Leopards, who want to assess him on a two-week trial beginning next Monday up to July 14, according to the invitation letter signed by Lidoda Duvha’s chief executive Fulufhelo Thidiela yesterday.
Deda said they will engage Zifa to get the greenlight for the player to travel to South Africa as Diya has been included in the Warriors squad to take part at the Cosafa tournament from July 6-21 in Zambia.
Zimbabwe are scheduled to leave on July 11 with their first game against Malawi two days later.
“I have just received an invitation from Black Leopards for a two-week trial period for Diya.
“Depending on how the trial goes, he might also be making his way to Mpumalanga Black Aces because they want a good goalkeeper to help them stay in the league after getting promotion this year.
“I have communicated with Highlanders officials through their secretary Andrew Tapela who is well aware of the impending trials. I am going back to them again.
“We will also seek permission from Zifa to let him go and probably arrange for him to be flown from South Africa to Zambia soon after the trials,” said Deda.
