GANDANGA is coming home!

That announcement alone has sent waves of excitement across Zimbabwe’s music landscape.

The return of Chimurenga music icon, Thomas Mapfumo, next month for Jah Prayzah’s wedding is more than just another performance — it is an emotional homecoming for one of the country’s greatest musical legends.

It marks a special reunion between the legendary musician and the land where his roots remain firmly planted.

Known for being a man of principle, Mapfumo has always stood by his convictions.

During the liberation struggle and in the years following independence, he established himself as a fearless voice for the ordinary Zimbabwean, using his music to speak truth to power and champion the aspirations of the masses.

After relocating to the US, which has become his second home, many Zimbabweans had resigned themselves to the belief that he might never perform in his homeland again.

Although he briefly returned around 2018, he has largely confined his performances to South Africa and Zambia, leaving his fellow Zimbabweans yearning for a live show on home soil.

On Monday, the internet erupted after Mapfumo confirmed that he would travel to Zimbabwe to perform at Jah Prayzah’s wedding before returning later in November for businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s birthday celebrations.

In recent interviews with the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Mapfumo revealed that his greatest wish was to be buried in Zimbabwe.

He also revealed that despite living abroad for many years, Zimbabwe will always remain home.

The veteran musician further dismissed suggestions that he feared returning, insisting that Zimbabwe has always been a safe haven for him.

At 81, Mapfumo deserves every bit of the admiration he continues to receive after decades of shaping Zimbabwe’s music industry.

His return during the Second Republic is not only a triumph for the creative sector, but also a reminder that national icons deserve to be celebrated while they are still alive.

Beyond the performances, this visit presents an opportunity for Mapfumo to reconnect with family, friends, and loyal fans after years away. That makes the occasion even more significant.

Still blessed with the same commanding voice that captivated audiences in his youth, Mapfumo’s homecoming is a victory for Zimbabwe’s creative community.

It also gives Zimbabweans an opportunity to reflect on his remarkable journey — from his arrest during the liberation struggle to his immense contribution in placing Zimbabwean music on the global stage.

“My uncle’s visit is special, and it should not be portrayed otherwise,” said his nephew, Kurai Makore, who persuaded him to accept Chivayo’s offer to come and hold two shows this year.

“I was also ridiculed on social media by some people, but at the end of the day, music is the real winner in Zimbabwe.

“I simply respect the fact that he agreed to perform, and that alone was one of the wisest decisions he has made.

“Besides the package presented to him by Chivayo, we all wanted him back home for another celebration.

“He has been longing to come and perform, and I am looking forward to that event.”

Mapfumo’s former publicist, Dr Blessing Vava, who correctly predicted that the Chimurenga icon would certainly come, was equally excited by the news.

“The most solid and sound decision ever!” posted Dr Vava on social media.

Hearing this from Dr Vava, who has served Mapfumo with distinction over the years, makes the music legend’s return a triumph in its own right.

Of course, there were some who had urged him to turn down the offer, but his management has silenced the doubting Thomases once and for all.

In fact, many were caught flat-footed, as Mapfumo is a man of his word who follows his heart.

With his stage names — Gandanga, Mukanya and the Lion of Zimbabwe —still on many people’s lips, his return is a triumph not only for the showbiz industry, but also for the creative community at large.

For the country, this is also a triumph, proving once again that Zimbabwe will always be a safe haven and a place to call home.

With many Zimbabweans returning home to help build the nation in unity, people of Mapfumo’s calibre will always be welcome to come back and enjoy themselves.

A retirement package for the music legend had long been necessary, but finding a way to broker such a deal was never easy.

It took businessman Chivayo to ensure that Mapfumo’s retirement package finally became a reality.

Mapfumo’s return is, therefore, more than a pair of lucrative performances.

It is the homecoming of a national treasure whose music has inspired generations and whose legacy continues to shape Zimbabwe’s cultural identity.

For many fans, seeing Gandanga perform on home soil once again will be a moment to cherish — one that celebrates not only an extraordinary career but also the enduring bond between an icon and his homeland.
