Aspiring Highlanders FC chairman Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda has been disqualified from contesting in the club’s elections by the Electoral Court on Monday.
Former club chairman Sibanda was other candidate making a bid to oppose incumbent Peter Dube who is now standing unopposed for the elections set for February 1.
Sibanda’s papers were thrown out because over the financial irregularities that once saw him being suspended from all the Highlanders club activities over the transfer of striker Obadiah Tarumbwa.
Tarumbwa moved to Belgian side Cercle Brugge on a sixth month deal in 2007 but some US$ 3 400 was allegedly misappropriated during the transfer.
Sibanda, who was the club chairman later repaid the money but was still slapped with a three year suspension from July 2010.
Members of the Electoral Court also questioned Sibanda’s involvement in the Asiagate scandal, during the period which he accompanied some of the Warriors as team manager.
Sibanda pleaded guilty to the Asiagate scandal and said he was tempted to take the money and the Highlanders Electoral Court felt he was not an ideal candidate.
Six Highlanders board members Ndumiso Sibanda, Elkanah Dube, Dumisani Sandi, Jimmy Ncube, Nicholas Mathonsi and Luke Mnkandla make up the Electoral Court.
On the Asiagate gate, Sibanda received a wholly suspended five year ban after the investigating committee pointed out that he was a credible witness.
