Maphosa appointed as Cossasa acting president

Innocent Kurira, Sports Reporter
NASH president Arthur Maphosa has, with immediate effect, been appointed acting president of the Confederation of Southern Africa Schools Sports Association (Cossasa) following the suspension of president Solomon Duiker.

Cossasa suspended Duiker for contravening the association’s constitution and failure to organise this year’s regional schools meet.

The Cossasa games were meant to be held on October 5-9.

But, there were member countries, Zimbabwe included, who had reservations and excused themselves from participating.

But, Duiker went on to organise the games but they were a non-event.

Only, Namibia with a full team and Lesotho with their Under-17 team made the trip to South Africa.

On arriving in South Africa, the Namibian was informed to return to Namibia.

Duiker is also accused of abusing Cossasa funds.

It has emerged, as alleged by Cossasa, that he single handedly authorised the withdrawal of payments, without following due procedure.

He is, in addition, accused of misleading the executive on the just failed Cossasa games held in Potchefstroom-South Africa which has put the Cossasa body into disrepute.

Another count on Duiker, he is alleged to have a questionable relationship with the United School Sports Association of South Africa (USSASA).

USSASA is believed to be an unrecognised body that went defunct years back.

He is therefore requested to surrender all Cossasa documents in 72hrs to Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU) office and desist from tampering with financial issues.

In a letter to Duiker, the Cossasa executive said he had been suspended with immediate effect.

“You are hereby informed that the Cossasa Executive committee in its virtual meeting held on 18/10/2022 took a decision to suspend the president from office with immediate effect (18/10 /22) until further notice.

“The suspension is in line with article 15:13 of the constitution. It has been noted with records that the president over exercised his powers and contravened the constitution. In the meantime the Executive has appointed Mr Arthur Maphosa who is the Secretary General to Act as the president too while we put our house in order.

“Other Exco members will retain their offices as elected in 2018. You are therefore requested to surrender all Cossasa documents in 72hrs to NSSU office and desist from tampering with financial issues,” reads the letter. – @innocentskizoe
