At least four people died and several others were injured when a police truck collided with a Zambia-bound bus at the Mapinga escarpment along the Harare-Chirundu Highway.
The police’s Mahindra truck reportedly encroached into the lane of the oncoming Trip Trans bus on a curve resulting in the collision at around 11am.
All those who died were in the police vehicle while the injured were in the bus.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.
“We can confirm that four people died in an accident at Mapinga along the Harare-Chirundu highway,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
“The accident involved a police truck, a Mahindra, and a bus.”
He said investigations were still in progress and further details would be released.
A passenger on the bus said the driver of the police truck failed to negotiate a curve and encroached into the lane of the oncoming bus, giving the bus driver no chance to react.
“Even if he tried to evade the oncoming police truck, he had nowhere else to go as there are rocks on the side of the road.
“There is also a ravine on the other side which could have resulted in the death of more people had the bus plunged into it,” said Mr John Tapera.
According to sources at the scene, three of the people who died were police officers.
The accident occurred around 11am and it is believed that the driver of the police vehicle failed to negotiate a curve resulting in the vehicle encroaching into the lane of the oncoming bus.
