ZIMBABWEAN professional golfer Visitor Mapwanya was crowned the Mapungubwe Golf Challenge champion at Ndola Golf Club in Zambia yesterday.
The 29-year-old Renco Mine based Mapwanya was two points ahead of fellow countryman Robson Chinhoi and Zambian Sydney Wemba.
Mapwanya had rounds of 69, 67 and 76 for a total four-under 212 to claim the first spot.
Mapwanya said he was delighted to have won the tournament away from home and praised the course’s conditions in Zambia.
“I am very happy with this win and my game continue to improve which I owe to hard work.
“The field was very competitive with Chinhoi and Wemba hard on my back.
“I am grateful that I managed to keep my composure throughout the event and the lead gave me more composure.
“I am looking forward to more game time and I hope I will continue to do well. The Chevron tour is giving us game time and some competition which is very crucial for the sport,” said Mapwanya.
Chinhoi, who is in the form of his life, managed rounds of 73, 67 and 74 to settle for second place while Zambia’s Wemba carded 66, 72 and 76 for his third-place finish.
Raphael Phiri from Zambia was fourth on three over-par 219 with rounds of 72, 71 and 76.
Zimbabwean Promise Sumbureiro was tied on fifth place with Zambia’s Paul Chidale as Ignatius Mketekete of Zimbabwe was seventh.
Zambians continued their dominance because of numbers with Gabriel Chibale finishing eighth while his countryman Bruce Chanda was tied on ninth place with Malawi’s Victor Kachepatsonga.
The Chevron Tour will return to Harare this month as local professionals continue to get more game time.
