YOU just can’t keep a good man down! This saying rings true for jazz artiste Majahawodwa “Jeys” Marabini, who celebrated an impressive 34 years in the music industry on Saturday at the “Friends of Jeys Marabini in Concert” held at the Academy of Music in Bulawayo.

It’s a remarkable achievement for an artiste to maintain a successful career for 34 years.
Marabini’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, featuring international tours, numerous album releases, personal visits with President Mnangagwa, and a generous gift of a vehicle from businessman Wicknell Chivayo. He also bravely battled an illness that briefly side-lined him, returning to the stage stronger than ever.

Jeys Marabini

Looking as vibrant as ever, Marabini proved on Saturday that he continues to evolve with the music scene. Clad in his signature straw hat and armed with a unique acoustic guitar, he delivered a memorable performance that underlined his ability to adapt to changing musical trends. His captivating performance showcased his artistry, connecting deeply with fans and reminding everyone why he is a staple of the music scene. His mastery of his craft ensured the audience was thoroughly entertained.

Steve Dyer

The concert also marked the unveiling of his new album, Inkemenkeme, to an appreciative audience. Sharing this milestone with friends made the occasion even more special.

Performers like Thandy Dhlana-Jele, Mbeu, and Pastor Barak joined in, each delivering engaging sets that resonated with the crowd. The Academy was alive with talent, featuring artistes like Asaph Afrika, Ramadu, Hudson Simbarashe, Gog’ Bekezela, Mzoe7, Desire Moyoxide, Madlela Sikhobokhobo, and even Chief Dakamela, ensuring a truly legendary night.

Lady Tshawe expertly guided the proceedings, keeping the energy high as she introduced each act. The night also included a display of Marabini’s memorabilia and collectables, further solidifying his legendary status.
The line-up of talented performers before and after him enriched the night, their collective energy creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Mbeu performing

A stand-out moment came when Steve Dyer took to the stage, and delivered a powerful rendition of Kunzima. His poignant opening remarks highlighted life’s harsh realities, and his soulful performance, complemented by exceptional piano skills, resonated deeply with the audience. The haunting melodies and the band’s harmonies painted a vivid picture of human struggles.

Dyer then shifted to Phola Ujabule, a song filled with hope and optimism, which sparked mixed reactions from some fans regarding the concert’s flow. While many appreciated the contrast between hardship and joy, others questioned whether it was appropriate to switch from a message of joy to confronting stark realities. Nevertheless, Dyer’s artistry prevailed, showcasing his talent for navigating complex themes in his music.

The late Oliver Mtukudzi

His nostalgic performance of Thabiso received thunderous applause, reminding the audience of his lasting impact despite a two-decade absence from the stage.
Mbeu also lit up the stage with his natural talent, blending vocal prowess, captivating instrumentals, and infectious dance moves to create an unforgettable experience. His heartfelt tribute to the late Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, with a rendition of Tsika Dzedu Dzakaendepiko, transported the audience back to Tuku’s era, allowing them to feel his spirit through Mbeu’s powerful performance.

As Mbeu engaged with fans up close, it affirmed his place in the music scene as a true talent honouring the legacy of those before him.
In summary, Marabini, Dyer, and Mbeu are indeed legends in their own right, and their performances continue to resonate deeply with audiences, proving their enduring impact on the music landscape.
