THREE Marange men will do 210 hours of unpaid work each after they were convicted of theft charges by a Mutare senior magistrate. Kudzai Nemakonde (23), Praymore Nemakonde (25), and Andrew Bumbura (20) pleaded guilty to theft when they appeared before Mrs Sekai Chiundura last week.
It was the State case led by Mr Fletcher Karombe that on March 7 the trio went to a cop, Kudakwashe Chipiti’s house in Marange and removed three 24-volts solar panel, three 12-volts batteries and a Prolink inventor.
The trio uninstalled the property using spanners and hid it under their beds.
On the March 8 Chipiti reported the matter leading to the police’s Dog Section conducting investigations with the help of sniffer dogs.
The trio were arrested after a dog traced their footsteps leading to the recovery of the goods.
Appearing in court, the trio attributed their bad behaviour to evil spirits.
“We erred Your Worship, we pray that the court exercise leniency in passing its sentence.
“We wanted money,” they pleaded.
Mrs Chiundura said: “I took into account that you are first offenders, but, however, there is need for the court to send a clear message to other people out there that crime does not pay.
“Each one of you is sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, but, however, I suspended six months on condition of good behaviour in the next five years.”
The remaining six months were suspended on condition that the trio performed 210 hours of unpaid work at ZRP Nyanyadzi.
