Phiyega was pilloried for apparently showing scant emotion as the widows and parents of the deceased fainted and cried out loud at the sight of the footage. Phiyega was later seen comforting the widows of two police officers killed in earlier incidents.
When asked about her behaviour and why she had not tried to comfort the distraught families, Phiyega said: “I am not here for that. I am here for the commission and the commission only.”
The inquest into the killings began hearings last months, and is tasked with probing the events that led to the massacre, including the conduct of the police.
In total, 46 people were killed at the Lonmin mine, some in clashes between miners. Two of the dead were police officers who were hacked and beaten to death. — AFP.
