FORMER Sables team manager Jason Maritz has joined Real Betis Academy in Zimbabwe as the commercial manager. According to the academy chairperson Gerald Sibanda, Maritz brings a wealth of management experience from regional and international sporting institutions. “Pleased to see Jason join our management team, we have had a fantastic four years in Zimbabwe.

Credit to the current team of management experts and we believe Jason will add value to grow the Real Betis Zimbabwe brand commercially in our grassroots programmes nationwide and beyond the region,” said Sibanda.

Maritz said he is looking forward to his new role. “It’s a great honour to join the Real Betis Project in Zimbabwe. For me to be involved is special, sport is sport and I am happy to play my part and help the brand to grow in grassroots football development and, of course, unlock value on marketing and commercial platforms.

Hopefully, we will have many Zimbabwean players in the Spanish La Liga in a few years to come,” said Maritz. After successfully launching its Under-21 football team last year, Real Betis Academy Zimbabwe has set its target of becoming a regional football development powerhouse this year.

The academy has plans to have the best Under-21 talent in the region as it focuses on preparing the academy players into professionals. The academy enrols five to 16-year-olds. — @innocentskizoe
