WORK towards the establishment of an irrigation scheme at Marowanyati Dam has commenced, in a development meant to improve farming and the livelihoods of many households in the drought prone district of Buhera.
The project is part of a comprehensive Government framework towards the establishment of irrigation projects and guarantee food security.
Marowanyati Dam is located near Murambinda Growth Point in Buhera.
Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) corporate communications and marketing manager, Mrs Marjorie Munyonga told The Sunday Mail that the dam was now almost complete and the establishment of the irrigation scheme was taking shape.
“Marowanyati Dam is substantially complete. Only the dam’s spillway and the stabilizing of the slopes on the dam wall are the outstanding works,” she said.
“The dam has a capacity to hold 50 million cubic meters of water and is being constructed to provide water to the expanding Murambinda Growth Point.
“The areas for the establishment of the irrigation schemes have since been identified and ZINWA is already carrying preliminary works on the construction of water conveyance infrastructure to the field edge,” she added.
Mrs Munyonga said at least 1 250 hectares of land are set to go under irrigation.
The dam has also been targeted for fish farming.
