Marufu to soldier on

CHAPUNGU skipper Phillip Marufu says he will fight for a starting place next season despite age catching up with him.

The former Dynamos and Democratic Republic of Congo’s FC Lupopo right winger is 36, but is not thinking about quitting unless the technical department feels otherwise.

“To me age is just a number and I’m not thinking of hanging up my boots anytime soon. However, I will have to discuss with the coaches whether they want me to continue playing or take up another role,” said Marufu.

The Chapungu executive last season appointed Marufu player-assistant coach, but he never barked instructions from the touchline as he made a number of cameo appearances in the early part of the season before bursting into the starting line-up.

He was satisfied with Chapungu’s performance in the just ended season and believes they can challenge for honours next season.

“I am satisfied with the overall performance of the team since we managed to consolidate our position in the Premiership and I am happy with the youngsters that made their debuts this season as they managed to adjust to the gruelling demands of the Premiership.

“Our youngsters have gained confidence and if we continue on the same path, I have no doubt that next year we can challenge for honours. What is needed is continuity,” he said.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino has already hinted that he would not be making wholesome changes to his squad for next season, but would not be drawn into commenting on the team’s prospects for 2016.
