Residents and business operators in Mashonaland East province have largely ignored calls for a stay-away protest, choosing instead to go about their day as usual.

Reports from across the province indicate a peaceful environment, with no incidents of violence recorded.

As early as 7 am, commuter omnibuses and buses were actively transporting passengers to and from work.

Shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, boutiques and restaurants all opened their doors to serve the public, signalling a clear rejection of the stay-away call.

Marondera entrepreneur Mr Tanaka Zimunhu expressed his disapproval of the protest, emphasising the need for economic productivity.

“If I do not come to work, where will I get money to take care of my family? Will my family eat that ‘stay away’?

“I do not want to take part in anything that threatens my source of income. Those who called for it can stay home, but as for me, I am doing business as usual.
